The High-Flying Rooster
"I can fly higher than any other rooster in the whole
world," said Cockadoo. All the chickens in the run looked at their lord
and master with respect in their eyes and said, "Yes, we know, cluck cluck
cluck!"
"Just watch," said Cockadoo the rooster, "I'll show you how amazingly
high I can fly." He stood on the tips of his toes, crowed very loudly
and then flew ten or twelve feet in the air, landing on top of the chicken
coop. "Did you see that?" he cried. "Did you all see it?"
"We did," said the chickens with awe in their voices. "That was very very
high."
Cockadoo the rooster puffed up his chest to crow again in triumph, but
his cock-a-doodle-doo stuck in his throat. Because standing there on top
of the chicken coop like that, with his head held high, he'd noticed something.
In the distance he could see a rooster, he was sure it was a rooster,
but it had flown much higher than he had, and now it was sitting on the
church steeple, right at the very top.
