Back
at the platform, the train still hadn't moved an inch. Another ten-minute
delay had been announced, this time because of a minor technical malfunction.
But the real reason was the champagne. The champagne they had delivered
had turned out not to be champagne at all. Auntie Mags, the manageress
of the dining car, declared, "This is fizzy water. I refuse to serve fizzy
water to all those big shots." And she threatened to get off the train
and leave them to it. That settled things, and they quickly ordered new
champagne. Because besides being an excellent dining car manager, Auntie
Mags was also good friends with Hank the train driver. And her husband,
Uncle Dirk, was head of timetables at the Railroad Control Center. In
other words, they were all very important people and that train wasn't
going anywhere.
