Yip and Yannika Play Together
Yip walked around his backyard and was bored. But
look, what's that? A hole in the hedge. What's on the other side of the
hedge? thought Yip. A palace? A gate? A knight in armor? He got down on
his hands and knees and looked through the hole.
And what did he see? A little nose. And a little mouth. And two blue eyes.
It was a girl. And she was the same size as Yip.
"What's your name?" asked Yip.
"Yannika," said the girl. "I live here."
"You didn't live here yesterday," said Yip.
"I live here today," said Yannika. "Do you want to come and play with
me?"
"I'll crawl through the hole," said Yip.
And first he poked his head through the hole. And then one arm. And then
the other arm. And then he got stuck.
And Yannika pulled one of his arms. And then she pulled the other arm.
But it didn't help. Yip was stuck. And Yip started crying. And he screamed.
Then Yip's father came walking up on one side of the hedge. And Yannika's
father came walking up on the other side of the hedge. And together they
helped Yip back through the hole. "Well," said Yip's father, "now you
have a friend next door. But you have to tell us first, and then go out
the front door, and then go in through Yannika's front door. Then you
can play together."
And that's what they did. Yip and Yannika played together.
They played at Yip's one day. And the next day they played at Yannika's.
And they played mummies and daddies.
