Excerpt from Chapter 2: The
Top Button
"Phew," said Abel, "I can relax a bit..."
For a while no one came into his elevator. He sat on his bench looking
up at the green button. It sure looked like a real button. What would
happen if he pressed it? Should he do it just to find out? It probably
wouldn't do anything anyway. Funny that everyone was staying downstairs
for the raffle and no one wanted to go upstairs. Or... yes, someone was
coming his way. And not just anyone, it was Laura, the girl from next
door who had been in his class at school.
"I've never been in an elevator before," she said. "Can I go up with you?"
"Sure," said Abel. "Come in. Just a second, here's someone else."
A man with a round face and a fur collar on his jacket came into the elevator.
"So, young man," he said. "I'd like to go to the fifth floor, please.
I have to go to the carpet department. That is on the fifth floor, isn't
it?"
"Yes, sir, just a moment, sir," said Abel.
